VAN CLEEF & ARPELS. REFLECTIONS OF ETERNITY
Marc Petit

Born of the love story between Estelle Arpels and Alfred Van Cleef, dynasty 22, place Vendôme dedicated since 1906 its know-how to the selection of the more gems around two themes: the nature of flowers, leaves or butterflies, and haute couture, it reproduced in jewellery meshes, nodes and other clasps. A style in the world as early as the 1930s, inspiring many other Jewellers. Strong point of the House, technical innovations that are forgotten frames and leave to speak rubies and emeralds cut more closely. This book appears on the centenary of Van Cleef, illustrated by unpublished photos of the great dead nature photographer Guy Lucas of Peslouan. Found with happy clients stars of the House in images from archives of Jackie Kennedy to the Uma Thurman passing by Maria Callas. O N

REMBRANDT
Gary Schwartz
Rembrandt was born 400 years ago. For the second time in 25 years, Gary Schwarz he dedicated a book "comprehensive". This monograph has the ambition to explore all facets of its huge production (more than 300 paintings, 500 drawings and some 200 etchings) through the study of his pictorial technique and the functioning of his workshop, his professional milieu and its patrons, of its place in the Holland of century of gold, etc. New aspects of the art of Rembrandt are updated here. The Rembrandt is a sum, but also a beautiful picture book. The reproductions are superb and, if not learn by reading scholarly and exciting author comments, may simply be being dazzled by the richness and complexity of the Dutch master. R. V.

SPLENDOUR IN LEGACY. PALACES AND CASTLES OF THE GREAT FAMILIES OF EUROPE
Alexis Gregory, Marc Walter
"Have a beautiful ancestral residence is the source of countless problems, keep it is a real challenge," warns Alexis Walter. He dedicated this book to homes that still belong to the same family since the time of their construction. Thus the Haar Kasteel, near Utrecht, the largest castle of the Netherlands. Neo-Gothic style, it was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. The entrance hall, very large and flamboyant, is itself astounding. Change of scenery with the Casa de Pilatos, in the historical quarter of Seville, that mixes the styles medieval, Gothic, Moorish and Renaissance. The Italy is honored with the Palazzo Gangi, Palermo, where lived the prince San Vincenzo and where the Cheetah of Luchino Visconti was shot. Stay in Italy with the Palazzo Sacchetti, located between the Vatican and the Castel Sant'Angelo, which the giant Sala dei Mappamondi, of Renaissance style, was entirely decorated with frescoes by Francesco Salviati Mannerism. The splendours, in effect, which sometimes crushing the heirs. R. V.

THE EARTH
Gabriel Bauret, Gilles Fumey
Go directly to page 144. Face to face, two beautiful square photos. On the left, a peasant in Cairo and his camel are gentle eyes. Right, serious as two popes, a farmer and his Bull of 1 100 kilograms pose for Yann Arthus-Bertrand at the Paris agricultural show. Thousands of kilometres away, the same relationship with the animal, made of complicity, shared effort, and a dose of mimicry between man and the beast... The principle of the book is: on the theme of the peasants in the world, do respond to recent photographs taken in the four corners of the planet. The same August gesture of the sower in the Camargue and in Angola. Wrinkles on the forehead of a farmer in Lozère and the grooves of the plough in Belgium. Or on the contrary the exuberance of a market for cutting with the side Niamey aseptic plant tomatoes in Spain. Beautiful photos signed Depardon, Salgado, Martin Parr and others, accompanied by texts sometimes a bit pompous but very rich. A success. D. C.
