History
Chambers of commerce and industry have their origin in the middle ages: in France as in other European countries, merchants gathered in informal institutions to defend their common interests and adjust their internal conflicts, including in ports and towns where fairs were held. The first French Chamber of commerce was officially created in Marseille in 1599, followed by one dozen others. Removed in 1791, they were restored by 1 Napoleon in 1802 and saw their missions clarified and consolidated throughout the 19th century, until the Act of 9 April 1898, which still governs their administrative, legal and financial regime. The France is now 148 Chambers of commerce and industry (CCI) local and 21 regional chambers of commerce and industry (RCCI). The Assembly of French Chambers of commerce and industry (ACFCI) is the national and facilitator of these rooms: it is the successor to the Assembly permanent of the JIU, created in 1964.
